Real Wedding: Jodie + Nick's Destination Wedding Port Douglas

Posted by Whitney Hoare on 23.11.2017

When Jodie and Nick met 15 years ago the timing of their relationship wasn’t quite right and after dating for only a short while these two called it a quits. 10 years passed and the couple met again at a friends NYE party; the stars aligned and it didn’t take long for these love birds to decide that they were destined to be together forever!

Deciding on a Wedding Venue

After a holiday to Port Douglas it was clear that the perfect location for their destination wedding was in Port Douglas. After searching for venues in the area they found the perfect venue to celebrate their big day in the hinterlands of Mossman at a property called Bali Hai.

This Balinese style property sits on private acreage nestled in the trees for the entire world to just pass by; its location is so private its address is “somewhere in the rainforest”. This exclusive private estate was just what Jodie and Nick had in mind for their relaxed, fun and intimate wedding of 40 guests.

With the right location found Jodie started her search for the right suppliers to make their bright boho wedding a reality.

Planning the Perfect Boho Inspired Wedding

She left no detail to chance making sure she thought of everything to make her guests stay special. Jodie even organised custom tote bags to be waiting for her guests at their accommodation. Inside the tote were personalised cards and a mini itinerary for the guests, to enjoy some time with the bride and groom before the wedding.

When it came to planning the details for the day Jodie and Nick wanted to create an amazing experience for their guests from start to finish. Guests were picked up by coach and taken to the ceremony at St. Mary’s by the Sea, and after were whisked away to the picturesque Bali Hai.

Making an Entrance - Port Douglas Style

Unbeknownst to them, these two had a little surprise up their sleeve for their entrance. “One of our most memorable moments of the day would have to be when we flew in by helicopter from Port Douglas to arrive on the lawn at the Bali Hai in front of our very excited and surprised guests”.

Selecting The Right Menu

The food was incredibly important to Jodie and Nick; they really wanted to create a sumptuous feast. The family’s love of cheese matched perfectly with our Signature Cheese Table, which showcases a gourmet selection of Australian and International cheeses. Guests enjoyed this pre-dinner service inside the luxurious living area at Bali Hai overlooking the magnificent Daintree Mountains and surrounding rainforest.

The Reception

At dusk, Jodie and Nick led their guests down to the bamboo grove where we had suspended hundreds of glass votives above their dining table. “We must say a standout highlight for us all was the table setting in the bamboo grove with those glass votives hanging down, it certainly gave a WOW factor to the whole night and looked so amazing as the sun set.”

Presented also on the dining table were the beginnings of their Shared Table Menu. Jodie and Nick choose from a variety of menu items to create their own tailored menu, which was served to guests at the table during the course of dinner. Guests dined on imported charcuterie selections, housemade labna, stone baked breads, slow cooked beef sirloin, roasted barramundi, heirloom vegetables, to name a few. And to finish things off, a delectable crème caramel topped off this indulgent feast.

The Finer Details

When it came to surprises this couple really had fun with it; apart from the helicopter entrance, there were also surprise flash mobs, safari suits (an inside joke /tradition), LOTS of dancing and a sparkler send off at the end of the night. “We didn't want a DJ as we are music fusspots and only like independent music so we used a great little app called Wedding DJ. We had 8 separate playlists for the different parts of the day and it all worked brilliantly. It took time to do but its well worth the effort”.

The Suppliers That Made It Happen

“We were thrilled with all our suppliers, we worked with many lovely people who listened to what we wanted, offered suggestions, support and followed through with everything. The day went off without a hitch but a couple of stand outs for us were Matthew Evans our photographer who was with us from start to finish and the photos are all gorgeous. Our florist, Gabrielle, from Nine Blooms was wonderful, colourful, and creative and an absolute pleasure to work with, all the flowers she arranged were so lovely and my bouquet was very special”.

“And last but not least, we are so very grateful to Roux Blond Catering and working with Anne-Marie, Whitney and Darren to make this wedding day dream actually happen!! It took a good year of planning to work out the style, the overall feel we wanted, to choose from all the different foods /menus (amazing & delicious) and choosing decorations, the table setting and many, many details. So much goes on behind the scenes for it to all come together for that one big day but what a BRILLIANT job you all did because our wedding day was just out of this world, it was so tremendously wonderful and happy and we all enjoyed ourselves immensely. Our families and guests still love reminiscing about the day as much as we do and we will well into our future as husband and wife. Our 5 year plan is to renew the vows and do it all again and we wouldn't change a thing. So thankyou Roux Blond for helping to create the most memorable day of our lives it certainly was the BEST DAY EVER!!”

Jodie’s Advice For Future Brides:

Have fun with the planning, be creative, don't stress and take your time, do your research, compare suppliers, personalise as much as you can, lock in a great photographer and caterer and florist like the ones I used, and definitely capture your ceremony on video. Good luck xo
